STATUS REPORT FOR AUGUST 2007
|
Introduction
During August, the
Barbados Marine Trust increased its efforts to attract more
membership and 're-activate' existing members. Also during
this month, donations were made from companies like Cheffete ,
Bico, The Royal Bank of Canada and Digicel Barbados Ltd. Data
collection continued for the drain monitoring in coordination
with the Drainage Unit of the of the Ministry of Public Works
and Transport.
Drain Monitoring
Global Positioning
System readings for all the Carlisle Bay drains were recorded,
and registered in the drain data base. These drains are
monitored front the road to the beach. A photo database for the
drain monitoring was also established, organizing the photos in
folders. Each drain has its own folder with the photos organized
by the date they were taken and the location (beach side and/or
road side).
Note that not all
drains need to be separated into the beach and road side
subdivision. This depends on:
-
the distance
from the end of the outfall to the road,
-
the drain
layout between the road and the beach, and
-
the degree of
coverage, since some drains are covered by the road and
can’t be assessed from that side.
Other measures
include:
-
the level,
color and appearance of the water,
-
the height of
the sandbar
-
the amount and
type of garbage in the drain
-
the type of
sediment in the drain
Data Collection
In order to make
the data collection more efficient and comprehensive, the
datasheets were modified to include some situations which we
were not able to observe in the field before the rainy season.
Database
The blank forms of
the database are ready, and we have already started inputing
data on it.
Donations
Although August is
usually a quiet month due to holidays, the BMT was pleased to
receive donations from Chefette, Bico, Digicel as well as the
Royal Bank of Canada.
The TDC also paid
the final portion of its donation for the earlier Reef Ball
Project. The wording of the information on the signs is also in
discussion with the TDC. The NCC has also given permission to
the BMT for the erection of the signs on the Carlisle Bay beach
as they relate to the observation and protection of that section
of the South Coast. The BMT is discussing with other corporate
members about further funding for projects, so if you know of
any other environmentally aware companies who are also socially
responsible, we would appreciate it I you contact us:
bmtrust@sunbeach.net or 426-0655.
Membership
A membership drive
for both individuals and corporations is in its early stages.
The next Annual
General Meeting is being planned for October this year.
