"To Preserve,
Protect and Enhance Marine Life" |
 |
The Project began with a workshop "Caring
for our Coasts and our Future" for dive operators.
One of the outputs of the programme was the creation of
an Accreditation Scheme for commercial operators of the
sea. Support has been given from the UNDP in the
form of a GEF/SGP grant to complete the development of
and implement Caribbean Wise during the Carlisle Bay
project, continuing with the Dive Operators as the Pilot
Commercial Group. |
Caribbean
Wise seeks to:
- Train
Commercial Operators in environmentally sound
techniques;
-
Develop a Code of Practice for each user group;
- Raise
awareness of the legislative framework in which
operators function;
-
Identify Accredited Caribbean Wise Operators through
uniquely distinguishable symbols on all publicity
materials. This clearly distinguishable branding
will create a niche for accredited members;
-
Development of a Caribbean Wise Online Marketing Network
which will provide members with direct access to
European markets to attract new revenue bases from its
link to the founder of the UK Wise Organisation (http://www.wisescheme.org.uk)
-
Develop a system for reporting damages seen on coral
reefs, endangered turtles etc. These reports will
be incorporated into a database, with information
gathered and used by Caribbean Wise Operators (managed
by the Barbados Marine Trust). This database will
be developed to meet the needs of its members. For
example, information of unusual sightings of wild life
can be shared by Caribbean Wise Network members;
-
Monitor the operations of accredited members to
supervise and maintain the validity of the Accreditation
Certificate. It is hoped that the Education
Environmental Stewards will progress to form the core of
the monitoring team for Caribbean Wise; and
-
Maintain a credible register by developing a Merit and
Demerit scheme.
